The Midnight Escort

The biting winter wind whipped across the desolate, icy airfield, carrying the deafening, low whirring of helicopter blades. Dr. Joanna Vance pulled her navy winter coat tightly around her light blue scrubs, her breath rising in anxious white plumes in the twilight air. She had been abruptly pulled from her shift at the hospital, escorted without explanation by a silent state trooper. Now, standing on the frozen asphalt, she stared at the sleek blue and silver helicopter idling in the distance.

Beside her stood Officer Miller, his hand resting near his holster, and a stern-faced man in a charcoal suit who introduced himself only as Arthur. The atmosphere was thick with a tense, unspoken urgency. Officer Miller extended his arm, pointing toward the aircraft, silently guiding the nervous surgeon forward. Joanna’s heart hammered against her ribs. Why was a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon being summoned to a classified, remote airfield in the middle of a freezing night?

"Please, just tell me who is in there," Joanna pleaded, her voice trembling. "If this is an emergency, every second we waste out here could be fatal."

Arthur didn't look at her, his eyes fixed on the horizon. "You'll see soon enough, Doctor. Just prepare yourself. What you are about to see does not leave this airfield."

With a shallow breath, Joanna walked forward slowly, peering anxiously into the dimming light. Every step felt like walking into a trap. The camera of her mind replayed the last five years of her quiet, grief-stricken life. Since the tragic car crash that took her husband, David, she had thrown herself entirely into her work, raising their daughter alone. As she reached the open bay of the helicopter, the dim interior lights flickered, revealing a gurney and a patient hooked to a portable monitor. When she finally looked at the man's face, the world stopped spinning.
