The Name on the Birth Certificate

The archive felt colder as the HR director's words hung in the air. Edward's grip on Lily's hand tightened, and his mind raced. Another grandchild? A secret from 20 years ago? He thought he'd buried that part of his life.

"Who?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Who is the woman?"

The Janitor's Gold Keycard: How a Ceo Learned His Building Has One True Owner

The director, whose name was Rachel, held out a yellowed envelope. "Her name was Maria. She was a receptionist here, briefly. She left without notice, and we never heard from her again. But she filed this claim, and it was never processed."

Edward took the envelope, his hands trembling. He opened it, pulling out a birth certificate. The father's name was blank, but the mother's name was clear: Maria Elena Torres.

Lily looked up at him. "Grandpa, is that my grandma?"

"No, sweetheart," Edward said, his voice thick. "It's someone I knew a long time ago. Before I met your grandmother."

He studied the document, finding a note at the bottom: "Child's name: Daniel Ashworth. Born: 24 years ago."

Daniel. His son. A son he never knew existed. And if this Daniel was working in the building, he could be anywhere, doing anything, completely unaware of his heritage.

"Do you have an address?" Edward demanded.

Rachel shook her head. "The file was incomplete. But we have his employee ID. He works in the mailroom on the third floor."

Edward didn't hesitate. He strode to the elevator, pulling Lily with him. "Take me to him."

The ride was silent, the weight of the revelation pressing down on them. When the doors opened, they found a young man in a grey uniform, sorting envelopes. He had Edward's eyes — a sharp, intelligent green that had been passed down through generations.

"Daniel?" Edward said, his voice soft.

The young man looked up, startled. "Yes? Can I help you?"

Edward held out the birth certificate. "I think I'm your father."

Daniel froze, the envelope in his hand slipping to the floor. "What?"

"I didn't know," Edward said. "I swear, I didn't know. But I'm here now. And I'm not going anywhere."

Daniel's face contorted with confusion and anger. "You're the janitor. You've been mopping floors for years. And you're telling me you're my father?"

"I'm also the chairman," Edward said. "I've been undercover, but that doesn't change the truth. You're my son."

Daniel laughed bitterly. "So you're rich? And powerful? And you didn't know about me?"

"I didn't," Edward said. "But I know now. And I want to make it right."

Lily stepped forward, tugging Daniel's sleeve. "Hi. I'm your sister. Well, half-sister. I guess."

Daniel looked down at her, his anger softening for a moment. "Hi."

Edward took a deep breath. "There's a lot to explain, and a lot to make up for. But I want you to know that you have a place here. A real place. Not just in the mailroom."

Daniel shook his head. "I don't know you. I don't trust you."

"You don't have to trust me yet," Edward said. "But let me try. Give me a chance to be your father."

There was a long silence, broken only by the hum of the fluorescent lights. Daniel looked from the birth certificate to Lily's hopeful face, and slowly, a crack appeared in his armor.

"I'll… I'll think about it," he said.

Edward nodded, a tear slipping down his cheek. "That's all I ask."

As they walked away, Lily squeezed his hand. "Grandpa, you found a new family today."

"No," Edward said, smiling. "I found an old one. And I'm not letting go this time."
