Previously: A disabled boy's science fair win is cruelly dismissed by a teacher. But when the governor—his grandfather—and a janitor with hidden footage step in, her smug world shatters in seconds.

The Scholarship Coordinator's Last Card

Word spread through the academy like wildfire. By the time the governor's black SUV pulled away from the curb, half the faculty had already heard about Valerie Pemberton's humiliation. The other half heard it from the students, who'd seen everything through the glass doors.

But Valerie wasn't done. She was a fighter, and she had one card left to play.

The next morning, she marched into the principal's office with a folder full of documents. "I want to file a formal complaint," she said, her voice steady. "Against the governor. For public humiliation and abuse of power."

Principal Hannah Reyes—a patient woman with a grey-streaked bob—looked up from her desk. "Valerie, I saw the footage. You knocked a seven-year-old's essay to the floor and told him to get out."

"I was disciplining a student who cheated," Valerie said, sliding the folder across the desk. "I have proof."

Principal Reyes opened the folder. Inside were photocopies of Leo's essay, with certain phrases circled in red. "This paragraph matches a published paper from 2019," Valerie said. "He plagiarized. I was just doing my job."

The principal studied the documents, her frown deepening. "I'll have to look into this."

"You'll find I'm right," Valerie said, a triumphant gleam in her eye. "And when you do, you'll see the governor's a liar. He used his power to protect a cheater."

Principal Reyes sighed. "I'll call you when I have more information."

Valerie left the office with her head held high. She thought she had won.

But she hadn't counted on Thomas.

The janitor had been in the security room when he heard about the complaint. He knew Leo hadn't cheated—he'd watched the boy work on that project for weeks, seen the rough drafts, the torn pages, the hours of effort. But the proof was in the footage.

He pulled up the security feed from the science fair. There was Valerie, knocking the essay to the floor. But there was more—footage from three weeks earlier, showing Valerie entering the computer lab after hours. She'd accessed the school's shared drive and copied a file. Leo's file.

Thomas's hands trembled as he watched. She wasn't just cruel—she was a thief. She'd stolen his work and then tried to destroy him for it.

He saved the footage to a USB drive and slipped it into his pocket. Then he called the governor's office.

Two hours later, Governor Matteus Van Der Berg walked into the academy's security room, flanked by two state troopers. Thomas handed him the USB drive without a word.

"What am I looking at?" the governor asked.

"The truth," Thomas said. "She copied his work. She's the one who cheated."

The governor's face darkened. "I see."

"I also found something else," Thomas added, pulling up a second file. "This is from the scholarship database. Valerie approved a scholarship for a student who didn't meet the requirements. Her nephew. She's been doing it for years."

The governor's eyes narrowed. "She's been stealing from the academy?"

"From the kids," Thomas said. "She's been taking money meant for deserving students and giving it to her family."

Matteus was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "I want a full audit. And I want the police involved."

"Yes, sir," Thomas said.

That afternoon, while Valerie was in the middle of a lesson, the doors to her classroom burst open. Two state troopers entered, followed by Principal Reyes and the governor.

"Valerie Pemberton," one of the troopers said, "you're under arrest for fraud and embezzlement."

Her students gasped. Valerie's face went from white to gray. "This is a mistake—"

"There's no mistake," the governor said. "We have the footage. We have the records. And we have your nephew's scholarship file."

Valerie's jaw dropped. "You can't—I have rights—"

"You had a right to be a decent human being," the governor said. "You chose not to."

As the troopers handcuffed her, Leo appeared in the doorway, still wearing his leg brace. He looked at Valerie, then at his grandfather.

"Did she cheat?" he asked quietly.

"She did," the governor said. "But you didn't. You earned that gold star, and no one can take it from you."

Leo's face lit up. "So I'm still the winner?"

"You're still the winner," his grandfather said, kneeling down. "And you always will be."

Leo hugged him tightly. "Thank you for believing me."

"I'll always believe you," Matteus said. "Because you're a Van Der Berg. And we don't give up."

But as the troopers led Valerie away, Thomas pulled the governor aside. "There's something else," he said. "About the scholarship audit."

"What is it?" the governor asked.

Thomas looked around, then lowered his voice. "I found a pattern. It's not just Valerie. There's someone else involved. Someone high up."

The governor's expression hardened. "Who?"

Thomas hesitated. "I think it's your brother."

The governor's face went pale. "My brother? That's not possible."

"I have proof," Thomas said. "But you might not want to see it."

Matteus stared at him, his mind racing. "Show me."
