The Courthouse Showdown
The courthouse was a gray granite monolith, as cold and unforgiving as the secrets it held. Julian stood at the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, while Victoria sat beside Maya, who was clutching the locket like a lifeline.
"She can't take her from us," Victoria said, her voice raw. "Not again."

Julian turned, his face grim. "Martha's lawyer just filed a motion. She's claiming she has evidence that we abandoned Maya deliberately."
Victoria's face went pale. "That's a lie!"
"She says she has documents," Julian said slowly. "And she's demanding a DNA test before the custody hearing."
"Then we'll give her a DNA test," Victoria said. "It'll prove we're her parents."
Julian shook his head. "It's not that simple. If she has something on us... something that could be twisted..."
Maya looked up, her dark eyes searching. "What does she want?" she asked quietly.
Julian knelt in front of her. "Nothing, baby. We're not letting her anywhere near you again."
But the next morning, Martha was waiting for them outside the courtroom. Her floral housecoat was gone, replaced by a cheap navy suit, and her eyes held a cold amusement that made Julian's skin crawl.
"Mr. Rosewood," she said, stepping into his path. "I believe we have some things to discuss."
"We have nothing to discuss," Julian said flatly.
"Oh, but we do. You see, I've been caring for your daughter for six years. And in that time, I've learned a few things about the Rosewood family." She smiled, thin and cruel. "Things that would make the tabloids very happy."
Victoria stepped forward, her voice trembling. "What are you talking about?"
"Let's just say," Martha said, "I have proof that you two weren't the doting parents you pretend to be. That you left your daughter with a trusted friend... and then never came back."
"That's not true!" Victoria cried. "We were attacked. Someone took her from us!"
"That's your story," Martha said. "But I have a different one. And I have witnesses who will testify that you sold her for a quick profit."
Julian's face went white. "You're insane."
"Maybe," Martha said, "but the judge will listen to me. Unless..." She paused, letting the silence hang. "Unless you're willing to make a deal."
"What kind of deal?" Julian asked, his voice barely controlled.
"You drop the charges against me. You pay me a million dollars. And you let me walk away."
Victoria gasped. "You're blackmailing us!"
"I'm being practical," Martha said. "You have something I want. I have something you want. Let's trade."
Julian stared at her, his mind racing. He could fight her in court, but she had leverage. And leverage meant risk.
"We need time," he said finally. "We'll discuss it."
Martha's smile widened. "You have until tomorrow. Then I go to the press."
She walked away, leaving Julian and Victoria standing in the hallway, their world crashing down around them.
"Julian," Victoria whispered, "what are we going to do?"
He looked down at Maya, who was watching them with a fear that broke his heart. "We're going to fight," he said. "We're not losing her again."
But even as he said it, he knew Martha wasn't bluffing. She had something, and it was only a matter of time before it came to light.
