The rain fell in heavy, relentless sheets against the cold pavement of the city. Under the harsh neon glow of a luxury fashion storefront, nineteen-year-old Luke stood shivering. His clothes were soaked through, and his white shirt was stained with dark mud. In his chest, a storm far more violent than the one overhead was raging. He had spent his entire life nursing a bitter, burning hatred for the woman who had supposedly discarded him like trash. Tonight, he was finally going to look her in the eye.

A sleek, black sedan pulled up to the curb, its pristine surface reflecting the bright display windows. The driver hurried to open the door, and out stepped Vanessa Sterling. She was the picture of elegance, draped in a beige trench coat, her expression calm and composed. Seeing her effortless luxury made something inside Luke snap. Before anyone could stop him, he scooped up a bucket of dirty street water and threw it across the sedan.

With a desperate surge of adrenaline, Luke lunged forward and pulled the heavy car door open. Vanessa stepped back in sheer shock, her eyes wide as she took in the dripping, muddy young man standing before her.

"Are you out of your mind?!" she yelled, her voice trembling with anger.

Tears streamed down Luke’s face, hot and fast, mixing with the freezing rain.

"My mother waited for you," he cried, his voice cracking with years of suppressed agony. "But you never came back."

Vanessa froze, her defensive anger instantly vanishing, replaced by profound confusion.

"She told me you abandoned me," Luke sobbed.

With trembling fingers, he pulled a crumpled, plastic-wrapped photograph from his pocket. It was a picture of a younger Vanessa in a hospital bed, tenderly holding a newborn baby. He thrust it toward her, desperate for her to acknowledge the sin of her past.
