Previously: When the maid's tears revealed a secret I buried for years, my father's right-hand man turned on me. Now, the truth threatens to destroy everything I built.

The Vault That Held the Truth

The next morning, Marcus had two cars waiting outside the mansion. Guard 1 drove the lead vehicle, and Guard 2 sat beside me in the back of the second car, his eyes never leaving me. I held the locket in my pocket, feeling the cool metal against my palm, and I rehearsed every lie I could think of.

The drive took us out of the city, up a winding road through the hills, until we reached an old estate that looked like it belonged in a gothic novel. The iron gates creaked open, and the car rolled up to a stone mansion that had seen better days. Weeds grew through the cracks in the driveway, and the windows were boarded up.

The Maid Knew Too Much: My Father's Guard Dog Confronted Me

"This was my father's place," Marcus said as he stepped out of the car, a hint of nostalgia in his voice. "He left it to me, but I never had the heart to tear it down. Too many memories."

I didn't answer. I was too busy scanning the property, looking for an escape route. But the bodyguards were close, and the gates were locked behind us.

Marcus led us into the house, through a dusty foyer, and down a narrow staircase to a basement that smelled of earth and old iron. At the end of a hallway, there was a door made of steel, with a keyhole that matched the fleur-de-lis pattern.

"This is it," Marcus said, his voice echoing in the dark. "The vault of the Marchetti family. Everything that was stolen from me is in there."

He inserted the key, and the lock turned with a click. But the door didn't open. Instead, a small panel slid aside, revealing a biometric scanner.

"Your turn," Marcus said, gesturing to the scanner. "Press your thumb here."

My heart raced. I knew that once I did this, I would be giving Marcus everything he wanted. But I also knew that if I refused, he would hurt me, maybe even kill me. I had to think fast.

I placed my thumb on the scanner, and a green light flashed. The door began to slide open, revealing a dimly lit room filled with filing cabinets and old safes. But something was wrong. The room was empty, except for a single envelope on a table in the center.

Marcus pushed past me, his eyes wide with greed. He grabbed the envelope and tore it open, pulling out a letter. As he read it, his face turned from triumph to horror.

"What is this?" he demanded, his voice shaking. "This is just a letter. Where are the deeds? Where is the money?"

I stepped closer, and I saw the letter. It was written in my mother's handwriting, and it said:

"Marcus, if you're reading this, you've found the vault. But you won't find what you're looking for. I moved everything years ago, to a place you'll never find. And I left you one thing: the truth. Sarah is not Joseph's daughter. She's yours. I kept her safe from you because I knew you'd use her. But now, you'll have to live with what you've done."

I looked up at Marcus, and I saw the shock in his eyes. His face had gone pale, and his hand trembled as he dropped the letter.

"You're my father," I whispered, and the words felt like a punch to the gut.

Marcus took a step back, shaking his head. "No. That can't be. Your mother and I… we were never…"

"But you were," I said, the pieces falling into place. "You had an affair with my mother, didn't you? And when she found out what you were planning, she ran. She took the key and the secret, and she raised me to be the weapon you'd never have."

Marcus's eyes filled with tears, and for the first time, he looked human. "I didn't know," he said. "I swear, I didn't know."

"But you would have used me anyway," I said, my voice cold. "You would have used me to get what you wanted, just like you used my mother."

I turned and walked out of the vault, leaving Marcus standing in the dim light. The bodyguards didn't stop me. They just watched as I climbed the stairs and walked out into the sunlight.

I didn't know where I was going, but I knew one thing: I was free. And my mother had given me the greatest gift of all — the truth.

As I reached the gates, I pulled out my locket and opened it. Inside was a tiny key and a note that said: "To my darling Sarah, you are stronger than you know. Use this key to start a new life. I love you, Mom."

I smiled through my tears, and I walked away from the mansion, leaving the past behind. The key to the vault was still in Marcus's hands, but the key to my future was in mine.
