Previously: Hired to clean the Varric mansion, I never expected to uncover the truth behind the baby's screams. But when I saw the bruise, I knew I had to act—even if it meant facing the mafia kingpin himself.

The Choice That Saved Us All

Matteo's hand moved with the speed of a man who had survived a hundred battles. He drew a small, concealed pistol and fired, the shot echoing through the night. Domenico staggered, his smile vanishing, replaced by a look of pure shock.

But the bullet only grazed his shoulder. Domenico fired back, and Matteo dove behind the SUV, returning fire. The exchange was brutal, a dance of death under the moonlight.

Liana pressed herself against the back seat, Nico crying in her arms. She couldn't just sit there. She had to do something.

She crawled across the seats, reaching for the door handle. The gunfire continued, but she knew Domenico's attention was on Matteo. This was her chance.

She slipped out of the SUV, crouching low, and ran toward the tree line. Her only thought was Nico—getting him to safety, away from this nightmare.

But Domenico saw her. He turned, raising his gun, and Liana's heart stopped. This was it. This was the end.

Then a shot rang out, and Domenico crumpled to the ground. Matteo stood behind him, his gun still smoking, his face a mask of cold fury.

"You should have stayed away," Matteo said, his voice flat. "You should have remembered who I am."

Domenico gasped, blood seeping through his fingers. "You think you've won?" he wheezed. "There's more. There's always more."

But his words faded into silence, and he lay still.

Liana stood frozen, Nico in her arms, staring at the scene. The guards emerged from the other vehicles, securing the area, checking Domenico's body. Matteo walked toward her, his steps unsteady, and stopped inches away.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice soft, the fury gone.

Liana nodded, tears streaming down her face. "He's fine," she whispered. "Nico's fine."

Matteo reached out, gently touching his son's cheek, his eyes glistening. "Thank you," he said. "I don't know how to repay you."

Liana shook her head. "You don't have to. Just keep him safe."

They drove to the safe house in silence, the weight of the night pressing down on them. When they finally arrived, Liana helped Matteo settle Nico into a crib, the baby's breathing even and peaceful for the first time in days.

In the kitchen, Matteo poured two glasses of whiskey and slid one across the counter to Liana. "You know, you could have left. You could have walked away."

Liana took the glass but didn't drink. "I couldn't. Not after seeing that."

"Why?" Matteo asked, his eyes searching hers. "What makes you care so much?"

Liana set the glass down, her hands trembling. "Because I had a daughter once. She was born premature, and she died when she was three months old. I couldn't save her."

Matteo's face softened. "I'm sorry."

"I blamed myself for years," Liana continued, her voice barely a whisper. "But tonight, when I held Nico, I felt like I had a second chance. Like I could make it right."

Matteo reached across the counter, taking her hand. "You did make it right. You saved my son. You saved me."

They sat in silence, the connection between them growing stronger, a bond forged in fear and hope and the fierce need to protect.

A New Beginning

The days that followed were a blur of police reports and security briefings. Domenico's accomplices were rounded up, and the evidence against them was enough to put them away for a long time.

Mrs. Hart was found in a small town across the state, trying to flee the country. She was arrested and charged with child endangerment and conspiracy. In her confession, she admitted that Domenico had promised her a fortune to make Nico "sick"—to create a crisis that would force Matteo to step down.

But the plan had failed, and now everyone knew the truth.

Liana stayed at the estate, not as a maid, but as a guest. Matteo insisted she take a room in the main house, and she found herself spending more and more time with Nico, watching him grow, laughing at his first babbling attempts to talk.

One evening, as the sun set over the city, Matteo found her on the terrace, Nico asleep in her arms. He stood beside her, his shoulder brushing hers.

"I've been thinking," he said. "You could stay. Not as a guest, but as family."

Liana looked at him, her heart racing. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," Matteo said, his voice steady, "that I can't imagine doing this alone anymore. And I know—I know—that Nico needs you. And so do I."

Liana's eyes filled with tears. "I don't know what to say."

"Say you'll stay," he said. "Say you'll be his mother. My wife."

She looked down at Nico, his tiny hand curled around her finger, and she felt a warmth spread through her chest. She had lost one child, but she had been given another chance. A chance to love, to heal, to build a family from the ashes of pain.

"Yes," she whispered. "Yes."

Matteo pulled her into an embrace, and she felt his heart beating against hers, strong and sure. In that moment, she knew that the past was behind her, and the future was a bright, open road.

As the stars emerged, one by one, Liana made a silent vow. She would protect this family with everything she had. She would be the mother she never thought she could be. And she would never, ever let the shadows of the past darken their lives again.

Because love, she realized, was the strongest force of all. And it had finally found her.
