The Moment He Saw the Birthmark on Her Wrist, the Orphanage Matron's Face Went Pale
Previously: A wealthy couple visits an orphanage, but when they see a little girl's birthmark, they realize she's their long-lost daughter. The matron's greed unravels in seconds.
The Matron's Desperate Gamble
The conservatory erupted into chaos.
Mrs. Gable's composure shattered as the two security guards flanked her, their hands hovering over their belts. She was used to being the one in control, the one who made children cower and visitors bow to her authority. But now, she was the one trembling.

"You can't take her," Mrs. Gable spat, her voice cracking. "There's paperwork. Legalities. You can't just walk in and snatch a child."
Arthur Sterling rose to his feet, his eyes like steel. "That 'child' is our daughter. Our daughter who was kidnapped from her nursery five years ago. And you, Mrs. Gable, are going to explain how she ended up in your care."
I felt Eleanor's arms tighten around me. She was crying silently, her tears soaking into my hair. I didn't understand what was happening, but for the first time in my life, I felt safe.
"Kidnapped?" Mrs. Gable laughed, but it was hollow, desperate. "You're mistaken. This girl was abandoned. No one came for her. She's been a ward of the state since she was a baby."
"Lies," Arthur said coldly. "My daughter was taken from her crib while my wife was asleep. The police searched for years. We've never stopped looking."
Eleanor pulled back, her hands cupping my face. "Lily," she whispered. "Your name is Lily. We named you after my grandmother."
I blinked. "My name is Lily?" I'd been called 'girl' or 'cripple' for so long, I'd almost forgotten I had a real name.
"Yes, sweetheart," Eleanor said, kissing my forehead. "You're our Lily."
Mrs. Gable had gone very still. Her eyes darted to the door, then to the guards, then to the cash ledger in her hands.
"I have proof," she said suddenly, her voice sharp. "Proof that you Sterlings are not the loving parents you pretend to be. Proof that your own family paid to have that child hidden away."
Arthur's face went pale. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about your father," Mrs. Gable said, a nasty smile curling her lips. "Arthur Sterling Sr. He came to me five years ago, paid me to take the girl and never let anyone find her. Said she was a scandal that would ruin the family name."
The room went silent. I could feel Eleanor's heart pounding against my back.
"That's a lie," Arthur said, but his voice wavered. "My father would never..."
"Oh, wouldn't he?" Mrs. Gable pulled a folded piece of paper from the ledger. "I have a signed letter, right here. You want to see it?"
She held it up, and Arthur reached for it, but she snatched it back.
"Not so fast," she said. "You want this letter? Then you'll drop all charges, and you'll pay me a million dollars for my ... cooperation. Otherwise, I'll give this to the press, and your perfect family will be destroyed."
Arthur's jaw tightened. "You're blackmailing me?"
"I'm protecting myself," Mrs. Gable said. "You have no idea what I've had to endure, running this place with no funding, no support. This is my retirement fund."
I looked at the letter in her hand, and something cold settled in my chest. If what she said was true, if Arthur's own father had done this... did that mean Arthur didn't really want me? Was he just going to pay her off and walk away?
Eleanor must have felt me tense, because she hugged me tighter. "Lily, listen to me," she said softly. "No matter what that woman says, you are our daughter. We love you. We've always loved you."
But Mrs. Gable's words hung in the air like poison.
