The Crush of the Berry Compote

The morning sun streamed through the gilded windows of the Sovereign Manor Resort's Regency Breakfast Room, casting a warm glow over the bone-china tea services and damask linens. I, Lily Ashworth, stood beside a VIP table, my eight-month belly a heavy weight, my dark curls pinned up beneath a crisp white apron. My daughter Mia, six years old with soft brown pigtails, clutched my hem, her eyes wide with innocent curiosity.

Across from us, Sterling Cross, an arrogant VIP with slicked-back blonde hair and a sneer that could curdle milk, lounged in his bespoke tan linen suit, his gold watch glinting as he waved a dismissive hand. “More compote,” he snapped, not even looking at me. I hurried to comply, but my aching back slowed me, and his patience wore thin as a frayed thread.

I reached for the glass bowl of berry compote, my fingers trembling from exhaustion, when Sterling’s hand shot out, knocking it from my grasp. The bowl crashed to the marble floor, crimson berries and glass shards scattering like a violent painting. The room fell silent, every eye on us. Sterling rose, his chair scraping, and pointed a ruthless finger at the mess.

“Bend down and scrub it!” he ordered, his voice slow and deliberate, each word a hammer blow. My lower lip trembled, and I cradled my belly, the baby kicking as if sensing my fear. “Sir, please—” I started, but he cut me off. “I said scrub it. Now.”

Mia gasped, her tiny hand tightening on my apron. “Mommy, don’t,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. But what could I do? I was a waitress, and he was a powerful man. I began to lower myself, my knees protesting, my body screaming in protest.

Just as I was about to touch the cold marble, Mia stepped in front of me, her small frame trembling but her eyes fierce. “Stop hurting my pregnant mommy!” she yelled, her voice cracking with tears. Sterling’s eyes narrowed, and he reached out to shove my shoulder. I instinctively shielded my belly, a primal protectiveness surging through me.

The world seemed to freeze. Then, from the arched marble doorway, a voice like thunder rolled through the room. “Take your hands off Lily.” I looked up to see Dominic Ashworth, my husband of five years, striding toward us in his bespoke black three-piece suit, his granite jaw set, his eyes blazing. He caught Sterling’s wrist mid-air, halting his advance.

Sterling recoiled, shock replacing his sneer. “Ashworth? What are you—” But Dominic silenced him with a look that could fell a tree. The Chief Operating Officer and security guards flanked him, their presence a wall of authority. Dominic stepped between me and Sterling, his back to me, a shield of pure strength.

“Security, escort Mr. Cross to the lobby,” Dominic ordered, his voice calm but iron. Sterling sputtered, but the guards closed in. But then, Dominic held up a hand. “Wait. There’s something you should see first.” The COO stepped forward, bowing, and presented a glowing platinum tablet.

My breath caught as I saw the screen: my face, a portrait, with the words “Sole Owner” beneath it. “She owns this entire hotel,” the COO announced, his voice carrying to every corner. All color drained from Sterling’s face, his arrogance crumbling to dust. I stood there, stunned, as Dominic draped his jacket over my shoulders, lifting Mia into his other arm.

“Security, throw them out now,” Dominic said, his eyes never leaving mine. As the guards dragged Sterling away, I felt a storm brewing inside me—not of gratitude, but of confusion. How long had he known? Why had he kept this from me? The answers, I knew, would change everything.
