The Secret Beneath the Silk

An hour later, I sat in Dominic’s private office, the platinum deed tablet cold in my trembling hands. Mia played quietly in the corner, but my mind was a hurricane. Dominic paced before the window, his usual composure cracked, his hands shoved deep into his pockets.

“You’ve known all along,” I said, my voice a whisper. “That I own this hotel. That I’m not just some waitress you married.” He stopped, turning to face me, his eyes pained. “Lily, I was going to tell you—on our anniversary. I wanted it to be a surprise.”

“A surprise?” I laughed, bitter and sharp. “You’ve watched me scrub floors, take abuse from guests like Sterling, and you thought a surprise was the right move?” He stepped closer, but I held up a hand. “No. You don’t get to comfort me. Not until I understand why.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened. “Because I fell in love with you when you were just a waitress. You didn’t know my wealth, my name. You saw me as a man, not a billionaire. And when I found out you were the sole heir to this estate, I feared I’d lose that connection.” I stared at him, the irony cutting deep.

“So you let me suffer,” I said, my voice breaking. “You let me be humiliated, because you were scared of losing your ego?” He flinched as if I’d struck him. “I never wanted you to suffer. I wanted to protect you from the sharks—like Sterling, who’s been trying to buy this property for months.”

The door burst open, and the COO rushed in, his face pale. “Sir, there’s a problem. Sterling’s lawyers are filing a lawsuit, claiming Lily’s ownership is fraudulent, that she used her position to manipulate the previous owner.” I gasped, the tablet slipping from my fingers.

Dominic’s eyes hardened. “He’s lying. We have the papers—the original deed, the trust documents.” But the COO shook his head. “They’ve vanished from the records office. Someone’s tampered with the system.” Panic clawed at my chest. “This can’t be happening. Not now.”

Mia looked up, her big eyes filled with worry. “Mommy, are we in trouble?” I pulled her close, my mind racing. Dominic knelt beside us, his voice low. “I won’t let him take this from you. I swear it.” But his words felt hollow, a bandage on a wound that was festering.

That night, as we drove home, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Sterling’s attack was more than coincidence. Why now? Why so public? I remembered his sneer, his confidence, as if he knew something I didn’t. And Dominic’s secret—was it the only one he was keeping?

We arrived at our penthouse, and I put Mia to bed, her small hand clutching mine. In the living room, Dominic poured himself a whiskey, his back to me. “There’s more you’re not telling me,” I said, my voice steady. He turned, guilt etched on his face. “Lily, I—I made a deal with Sterling. Months ago, before I knew you were the owner.”

My blood ran cold. “What deal?” He swallowed hard. “I promised him first dibs on the hotel if he’d keep quiet about your past—about the fact that you were once—” He stopped, but I knew. My old life, the one I’d run from, was about to resurface. And with it, a truth that could destroy everything.

“You gave him leverage,” I whispered. “You handed him the knife that could kill me.” Dominic stepped forward, but I backed away. “I need air,” I said, grabbing my coat. As I reached the door, he called out, “Lily, don’t—please.” But I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. The night air hit my face, and I knew the real battle was only beginning.
