Previously: When Ava saw her teenage brother Logan cornered in a freezing alley by a group of ruthless men, she thought the worst. But the truth behind his flight was far darker.

The Confrontation in the Cold

The heavy footsteps stopped just inches from where Logan stood trembling. Monty stepped forward, his massive frame blocking out the dim streetlamp. Ava held her breath behind a rusted dumpster, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was ready to throw herself into the fray to save her brother, regardless of the consequences.

"Please," Logan choked out, his voice cracking. "I don't have it. I swear, I don't have it."

Monty looked down at the boy, his expression unreadable beneath the shadow of his knit cap. The tough men behind him shifted impatiently, scanning the mouth of the alley for any onlookers. "We know what you have, kid," one of them growled, stepping forward, but Monty raised a heavy, gloved hand, instantly silencing him with a single sharp glare.

"Back off," Monty muttered. He turned his attention back to Logan, leaning in close so only the boy could hear him. "You think you're running from us, Logan? You've got it all wrong. We're the only ones keeping you alive tonight."

Ava's mind raced as she watched from the dark. What did Monty mean? For months, her family had been haunted by the sudden disappearance of her father, a man who had left behind nothing but a locked metal box and a mountain of unanswered questions. Logan had found the key just two days ago, unlocking a secret that put a target on his back.

"You're... you're with them," Logan stammered, his eyes darting to the dark alley exit.

"If we were with them, you'd already be in the back of that van," Monty said, his voice dropping to a low, urgent whisper. "Your father was my partner, Logan. He knew they were coming for the drive. He told me to protect you and your sister if anything ever happened to him. The men who took your father are blocks away, tracking your cell phone."

Suddenly, the headlights of another vehicle cut through the snowy darkness, casting long, menacing shadows down the alleyway. A black sedan had blocked the entrance. The real threat had arrived.
