The Ghost of the Tides

Armand’s scoop emerged from the churning depths, heavy with water and the promise of discovery. He raised it under the blinding surgical lights, the water cascading through the mesh, revealing a glint of platinum. It was a ring, undeniably, encrusted with wet sand, its surface catching the harsh light. The intricate cursive engraving on the inside was obscured by the grime, but the weight of it, the sheer improbability of its recovery, hung heavy in the air. Armand’s voice, a breathless, triumphant growl, cut through the tension. “Heavy platinum, double-beveled edge… this the ghost you’re hunting?”

Jack remained frozen, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and dawning realization. A single tear escaped, tracing a path down her cheek, landing with a soft plink on the cold steel table. The world outside continued its violent assault, thunder rattling the very foundations of the clinic, but within these four walls, a different kind of storm was brewing. A storm of secrets, long buried, now threatening to break free.

Armand stepped across the threshold, the water from his scoop pooling on the sterile floor. He placed the ring on the table with a resonant clatter. Jack’s trembling fingers reached out, brushing against the cold metal. The familiar weight, the slight coolness against her skin – it was Liam’s. A shuddering sob escaped her lips, a sound of pure, unadulterated disbelief. “How… how could you possibly pull a miracle out of that abyss?” she whispered, her voice trembling with a reverence that bordered on fear. Armand met her gaze, his expression unreadable, a stoic calm settling over his features as he wiped sea spray from his weathered cheek.

He then gestured towards the ring, his calloused finger pointing to the inside band. As Jack leaned closer, her breath catching in her throat, the harsh light illuminated a fresh inscription. It wasn’t a date of Liam's birth, nor their anniversary. It was a date from eight years prior. A date that coincided with the sudden, unexplained disappearance of her husband, Michael. The color drained from Jack's face as Armand’s voice, an eerie, chilling whisper, confirmed her worst fears. “Because your husband didn’t lose this in the storm tonight… I buried him with it eight years ago.” The world tilted, the storm outside a mere echo of the cataclysm erupting within her.
