She told me you had agreed to marry someone of your own social standing, and she paid off my landlord to throw me out. I had nothing, Robert. I was scared, pregnant, and alone."

Robert froze, shock washing over his face.

"My mother told you what?" he asked, horrified. "Julia, I never agreed to marry anyone else. I searched for you for months! My family told me you had taken a settlement and moved to Europe. I thought you abandoned our love for money."
