Previously: When Olivia's elegant evening was shattered by a violent assault, her husband George jumped to her defense. But the attacker's parting words exposed a dark web of lies that ruined everything.

The Mask Slips

The ballroom descended into utter chaos. Guests shrieked and scrambled away from the scene as security guards rushed through the double doors. Vincent lay on the floor, blood dripping from his lip, but instead of groaning in pain, he began to laugh. It was a chilling, dry sound that made the hairs on the back of Olivia’s neck stand up. George stood over him, his chest heaving, his knuckles bruised and bloodied, looking like a victorious protector.

"Get this trash out of here!" George bellowed to the approaching guards. "He assaulted my wife!"

But Vincent raised a hand, stopping the guards in their tracks as he pulled a crumpled, laminated document from his inner suit pocket. "Go ahead, throw me out," Vincent spat, wiping the blood from his mouth. "But she deserves to know who she’s actually sleeping with. Tell her, George. Tell her about the fire."

Olivia’s breath hitched. Ten years ago, a devastating warehouse fire had destroyed her family's business, bankrupting her father and leading to his untimely death. It was the tragedy that had left her vulnerable, driving her into the comforting arms of George, who had stepped in as her savior. She looked from Vincent’s mocking grin to George’s face. To her horror, the color had completely drained from her husband’s cheeks. The powerful, confident man was suddenly trembling.

"Don't listen to him, Olivia," George whispered, his voice cracking. "He’s a lunatic. He’s trying to destroy us."

Vincent slowly stood up, brushing off his midnight blue suit. "I was the fall guy, Olivia. George paid me fifty thousand dollars to set that fire so he could buy your father's remaining assets for pennies. When I demanded my fair share years later, he framed me and sent me to prison. I just got out, and I have the bank transfer receipts right here." Vincent tossed the damp papers onto the white tablecloth, right next to Olivia's untouched plate.
