The Terrifying Secret My Stepmother Hid Inside My Father's Closed Casket
Previously: When Leo rushed to his father's sudden wake, his stepmother Maria claimed the casket couldn't be opened due to a contagious disease. But the truth trapped inside was far more sinister.
The Sound in the Dark
Leo stared at his stepmother, his grief momentarily sidelined by a sudden, chilling wave of suspicion. His father, Arthur, had been a robust, healthy man just forty-eight hours ago. How could a disease act so quickly, and why hadn't anyone called Leo until the wake was already set up? Maria's face was pale, beads of sweat forming near her hairline despite the cool room.
"A contagious disease?"
Leo repeated, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"What doctor? Why wasn't he taken to a hospital, Maria? Why is he in our living room?"
"It was sudden, Leo. Extremely sudden,"
Maria stammered, pulling him away from the casket.
"The health department ordered an immediate sealed burial. We have to respect their guidelines. Please, let's step into the kitchen. You need to calm down."
Leo allowed himself to be led away, but as he turned his back, a faint, rhythmic scratching sound echoed from inside the oak box. It was subtle, almost lost beneath the hum of the air conditioner, but to Leo, it sounded like fingernails scraping against velvet. He froze. Maria noticed his hesitation and immediately gripped his arm tighter, her voice rising in pitch as she tried to distract him.
"We must leave him in peace, Leo. Come, have some water,"
she insisted, her eyes darting nervously back toward the casket.
Leo nodded slowly, playing along to lower her guard. He stepped into the hallway, but his mind was racing. The moment Maria went to the kitchen to fetch a glass of water, Leo slipped back into the living room. He approached the casket, his heart pounding in his chest. He leaned his ear against the heavy wood. Below the surface, he heard a distinct, muffled thudding. Someone was alive inside, desperately fighting to get out.
