The Wedding Gown Hissed Like a Pool Floatie — and My Grandfather Knew
The crystal chandeliers of the Bellagio Lakefront Villa threw golden shards across the cream-and-gold marble floor. Enzo De Luca stood like a monument in his graphite silk suit, his white hair swept back like a lion's mane, his onyx cufflinks catching the light as he rested a steady hand on his grandson's shoulder.
Five-year-old Toby clutched his grandfather's leg, his sandy-brown curls damp with nervous sweat, his little bow tie already crooked. He'd never liked these galas — too many adults, too much perfume, and always that sharp-eyed woman in white who looked at him like he was a stain on her perfect carpet.

Clarissa glided toward them, her champagne tulle gown rustling like a threat. Her crystal hairpins glittered, but nothing glittered like the cruelty in her eyes as she looked down at the child.
'Don't touch my gown with your sticky hands, you pathetic orphan!' she hissed, swatting Toby's fingers away with her diamond-encrusted clutch. The sharp crack of metal against tiny knuckles made Enzo's jaw tighten.
Toby didn't cry. He never cried in front of her. But his lower lip trembled, and his eyes pooled with tears that refused to fall.
'Once your grandfather signs the family trust over to my unborn baby tonight,' Clarissa continued, her soprano voice dripping with venom, 'you're going to boarding school. Far away. Where no one has to look at your sad little face.'
Gerald, her husband and Enzo's only son, stood beside her with a smug grin, his burgundy velvet dinner jacket straining over his paunch. He said nothing, just watched Toby shrink back against the patriarch's leg.
Enzo's hand tightened on Toby's shoulder. His voice, when it came, was low and dangerous. 'That's enough, Clarissa.'
But Clarissa wasn't done. She turned her back with a flick of her veil, and as she did, Toby tugged on his grandfather's sleeve. His tiny voice was barely a whisper, but it carried through the sudden silence.
'Grandpa… why is her tummy hissing like my pool floatie?'
Enzo frowned. 'What?'
Toby pointed a trembling finger at Clarissa's rounded midsection. 'Her diamond pin poked a hole in the rubber pillow under her dress.'
The room seemed to hold its breath. Clarissa's smirk froze, her face draining to the color of her gown as she instinctively pressed a hand to her belly — and felt the soft, sickening hiss of escaping air.
Enzo's eyes narrowed. He stepped forward, and Clarissa stumbled back, but there was nowhere to hide. He reached out, and with a single sharp tug, pulled the punctured, flesh-colored silicone bladder out from beneath her loosened satin sash.
The fake pregnancy pad dangled from his fingers, limp and deflated, as he held it up to the chandelier light. 'You thought a Velcro foam cushion would fool me,' he roared, 'while you treated my flesh and blood like dirt?'
Clarissa clutched her now-flat gown, her mouth opening and closing like a fish on a hook. Gerald stared, his smug grin shattered into shock.
Drago, the private security guard, lunged forward to block Enzo. 'Don't come any closer, boss,' he barked, 'I'm paid to keep your hands off her!'
But Enzo intercepted his wrist in mid-air and drove a devastating forearm strike into the man's chest, dropping him to the carpet like a sack of cement.
Enzo hurled the silicone belly onto the crystal table, where it landed with a wet slap. Then he wrapped his arm around Toby's shoulders and pulled him close.
'You traded your own blood for a silicone hoax,' he said, his voice booming through the conservatory. 'You are disowned effective immediately. Toby is sole heir to the entire De Luca dynasty.'
Clarissa and Gerald collapsed to their knees, their faces frozen in total financial ruin. Toby rested his cheek against his grandfather's lapel, safe at last.
But as the guards dragged Clarissa out, she screamed one last thing that made Enzo's blood run cold: 'You think you've won, old man? You don't even know who that boy is!'
And Enzo felt the first crack in his certainty.
