The Untamed Pack

The wet tarmac of the police academy yard glistened under a heavy, misty overcast sky. Megan stood near the edge of the training grounds, her navy blue scrubs a stark contrast to the sharp tactical uniforms of the recruits lined up in the background. She was there only to collect her final personal belongings, a painful task after being unjustly dismissed from the program she had spent a decade building. But before she could reach the administrative office, a sharp, frantic barking echoed across the yard.

Officer David, her ambitious successor, was struggling at the center of the yard. In his hands, he gripped the heavy leather leashes of four massive German Shepherds—the elite K9 unit Megan had raised and trained from infancy. The dogs were thrashing, their teeth bared, completely ignoring David's frantic commands. David’s face was red with exertion and embarrassment as the recruits watched his failure. "Pull them back, now!" he screamed, his voice cracking under the tension.

Suddenly, David lost his footing on the slick pavement. The leashes slipped from his grasp, and the four powerful beasts charged directly toward Megan. Officer Taylor, standing nearby, gasped and reached for his holster, expecting a horrific attack. But Megan stood perfectly still, her expression calm, her eyes locked onto the lead dog, Rex.

"Halten," Megan whispered, her voice barely carrying over the wind, accompanied by a subtle wave of her hand.

Instantly, the charging pack skidded to a halt. The aggression vanished from their eyes, replaced by pure devotion. Rex whined softly, pressing his massive head against Megan's knee, while the other three dogs formed a protective defensive circle around her, growling softly at anyone who dared approach. David stood frozen, his eyes wide with shock as he pointed a trembling finger. "They're... they're guarding her?" he stammered. Officer Taylor stared in absolute disbelief. "How did she do that?" Megan walked past David, the dogs moving in perfect synchronization with her. "They were never yours to control," she said coldly.
