Tornado Ripped My Tavern Apart, But the Real Storm Was Inside
Previously: As an EF5 tornado tore my dockside tavern apart, a desperate millionaire offered me a fortune to save his life. But his offer hid a secret far more dangerous than the storm.
Flesh Holds
The storm’s fury intensified. The tavern above us groaned, timber splintering. From my vantage point, bracing the iron doors, I could see sparks fly as the vortex ripped away roof shingles. Ship chains swung wildly, a percussive symphony of impending doom. Julian, utterly broken, collapsed to his knees in the bilge water pooling on the stone floor. He clutched my mud-caked boots in desperate supplication.
“The hinges are ripping—you’re going to get sucked out!”
His voice was a choked, breaking sob. He was right. The hinges were groaning, threatening to give way. But I wasn’t about to be sucked out. I wedged my shoulder under the iron crossbeam, my forehead veins bulging to near-bursting, and braced the doors with my spine. The pain was immense, a searing agony that radiated through my entire body, but it was a familiar pain – the pain of holding on when everything tells you to let go.

With a final, agonizing heave, I pulled the heavy iron doors shut. A deafening metallic thud echoed through the cellar, sealing us in a world of relative safety. The roaring tornado was muffled, pushed back by the sheer force of my will. The cellar plunged into a chiaroscuro glow, lit only by my old lantern. Julian stared up at me, his face illuminated by the flickering light, paralyzed in awe and tearful reverence. His terror had shifted, replaced by a profound, almost worshipful shock.
“Not while I’m breathing.”
My voice was a savage, unbreakable growl. I had held the storm at bay. But as I met Julian’s wide, astonished eyes, I knew the real storm was just beginning. He had offered me a fortune to keep a secret, a secret I now suspected was far more dangerous than any tornado. And somehow, I knew my life, and this old tavern, would never be the same.
