"Marcus, I understand you are angry and protective of your father,"

Jessica said, her voice dropping to a calm, professional register.

"But we need to step into my office. There is something about Arthur’s condition you need to see immediately."

Marcus hesitated, looking down at his father, who was now muttering incoherently and tracing patterns on the armrest of his wheelchair. Sensing that something was genuinely amiss, Marcus signaled his crew to wait outside and followed Jessica into the small consultation room. Jessica closed the door, shutting out the murmurs of the hospital staff, and pulled up Arthur’s digital medical file.

"Your father was admitted last night after being found wandering near the highway,"

Jessica explained gently.

"He didn't want us to call you because he didn't want to worry his boy. Marcus, your father is in the advanced stages of progressive dementia. He suffers from severe sensory delusions and memory gaps. When I reached out to help him, his mind convinced him he was being attacked."

Marcus stared at the screen, his tough demeanor beginning to crack.

"No, that's impossible,"

he muttered, shaking his head.

"He's just forgetful. He's old. He's always been the strongest guy I know."

Jessica reached into her drawer and pulled out a small, handwritten journal that Arthur had brought with him.

"He knew it was happening, Marcus. He wrote it all down because he was terrified of losing his dignity in front of you."
