Leaving the stunned guests to whisper among themselves, Thomas carried Leo up the grand staircase to his private study, with Elena following closely behind. Sarah stormed in a moment later, her face contorted with rage, her gold dress rustling loudly. "This is an absolute embarrassment, Thomas! You are letting a servant and a hysterical child ruin our reputation!" she shrieked.

Thomas turned, his eyes cold as ice. "Get out, Sarah," he said quietly, a dangerous edge to his voice. "Or so help me, I will have security throw you out in front of everyone." Seeing the absolute determination in her husband's eyes, Sarah retreated, slamming the heavy oak door behind her.

Thomas set Leo down on the leather sofa and knelt before Elena, who was still trembling. "Elena, please," he pleaded. "Tell me the truth. What happened at the hospital? Sarah told me the doctors restricted visitors, and that she was the only one allowed in the ICU."

Elena wiped her tears and took a deep breath.

"Mr. Sterling, that was a lie,"

she whispered.

"Mrs. Sterling paid off the night staff to keep you away, telling you Leo was too weak for visitors. But I couldn't leave him. When she thought no one was looking, she would whisper terrible things to him. She told Leo that if he ever told you how she treated him, she would make sure you sent him away forever. She wanted him gone so she could control the trust fund your late wife left behind."

Thomas felt a cold dread settle in his chest. His late wife, Claire, had left a massive inheritance solely for Leo, with Thomas as the trustee. If something happened to Leo, or if he was sent away to a foreign boarding school, Sarah had devised a legal loophole to gain access to the funds. Elena explained how she had snuck into the pediatric ward every night, singing Claire’s favorite lullaby to soothe the terrified boy while Sarah was out drinking at local hotel bars.
