The Storm Gathers

The air in the dockside tavern was thick with the smell of brine, stale ale, and desperation. Outside, a tempest raged, the wind howling like a banshee and rain hammering against the grimy skylight. Inside, the only light came from flickering, amber-hued industrial lamps that cast long, dancing shadows across the wet, worn floorboards. Thick, rusted anchor chains, relics of a bygone era, dangled ominously from the heavy timbered ceiling. It was a place where secrets festered and fortunes were made and lost with the tide.

In the center of this gloom stood Carter Ross, a man whose expensive charcoal trench coat and crisp Italian silk tie seemed out of place, yet perfectly at home in his ruthless demeanor. His slicked-back hair gleamed under the dim light, and his aristocratic jaw was clenched so tight his temple veins bulged. He radiated a predatory fury that sent a shiver down the spine of anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path.

Across from him, huddled as if trying to disappear into the very fabric of the decaying tavern, was his grandmother, Samuel. Seventy-one years old, she was a trembling figure in an oversized, threadbare beige cardigan, her faded floral dress doing little to ward off the chill. Her liver-spotted hands shook violently, thin silver strands of hair clinging to her tear-streaked, weathered cheeks. She looked like a ghost, lost in a storm of her grandson’s making.

“Sign over the dock lease, old hag,” Carter snarled, his voice a venomous rasp, “or I tear this rathole down with you inside!”

With a sudden, violent motion, Carter slapped a steaming ceramic coffee mug from Samuel’s trembling grasp. It shattered explosively on the floor, scalding liquid and sharp shards flying outwards, splashing against her dress hem. Samuel gasped, her breath hitching sharply, her eyes wide with paralyzed shock. She remained silent, clutching her frail chest, hot tears welling in her quivering lower eyelids.

Carter stepped closer, invading her space, his masked rage escalating. He cocked back a clenched, leather-gloved fist, his intent brutally clear. The dim light glinted off the tarnished steel of Axel Iron’s jacket, a hulking figure lurking silently in the background, a massive wall of muscle and menace. Samuel shrank back against the splintered wall, her chin quivering uncontrollably as Carter loomed over her.

“Nobody tells me no on my harbor—now take your medicine!”

His fist descended, aimed directly at her temple. But before it could connect, a blur of motion erupted from the heavy shadows. Axel Iron’s massive hand, clad in a fingerless leather gauntlet, shot forward, intercepting Carter’s fist mere inches from the grandmother's face. The impact was a deafening, concussive thud that echoed through the tavern, a visible shockwave rippling through Carter's coat sleeve. The landlord froze, his arrogant sneer replaced by wide-eyed, breathless shock as he stared at the immovable titan who had just saved the old woman.

“Lay one filthy finger on this sweet lady, and you leave these docks in a body bag.”

Axel Iron, a mountain of a man with a jagged white scar across his bearded jaw and cold, lethal slate-grey eyes, towered over the now-terrified landlord. The storm outside seemed to momentarily subside, as if even nature held its breath.
