Previously: A decorated war dog is sentenced to death in a raging storm, only for a fearsome Delta Force veteran to arrive and challenge the executioner. What follows is a fight for justice that echoes battles fought long ago.

The Arrival of a Warrior

The violent shuddering of the barn intensified as the double doors were thrown open with a deafening slam, defying the hurricane-force winds that raged outside. Framed against the chaotic tempest, a figure strode in with unyielding purpose: Ruth, a 34-year-old Delta Force veteran. Her battle-hardened cheekbones were stark beneath a severe high-fade haircut, and her stance was ramrod straight, a picture of military discipline. A rain-soaked OD-green tactical jacket, adorned with Delta insignia and the prestigious Distinguished Service Cross, clung to her frame. Her matte-black carbon-fiber prosthetic right leg struck the hollow floorboards with a thunderous, metallic clank, scattering sawdust and debris.

Julian Vance, caught in the act of his grim task, visibly flinched. His arrogant smirk froze, his pupils shrinking in a sudden, paralyzed shock as he clocked her insignia and the unmistakable silhouette of her prosthetic limb. He stammered, his voice cracking with defensive panic, "T-this animal is condemned property, ma'am, stay back!" His lower lip quivered uncontrollably, the veneer of authority shattering like the syringe he had dropped.

"Step away from that Sergeant, or I take your arm off!"

Ruth remained silent, her nostrils flaring, her jaw clenching like tempered steel. Her icy, unblinking glare pierced straight through Vance, a look that had sent hardened insurgents scrambling for cover. She took a decisive step forward, positioning herself squarely between Vance and Sergeant Havoc. With a razor-sharp, rigid combat salute, she lowered her gaze to the canine. Havoc, sensing the shift, the presence of a true guardian, responded instantly. His ears pricked forward with a flicker of pride, and he raised his scarred head from the dirt, his amber eyes meeting Ruth’s.

Her voice, when she spoke, was a gravelly rumble, vibrating with ferocious emotion and absolute command. "Sergeant Havoc saved thirty-two men in Kandahar. Lower that poison immediately!" The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of past battles and unspoken sacrifices. Vance’s breath hitched audibly in his throat, the color draining entirely from his terrified face as the full implication of Ruth's presence, her authority, and her unwavering resolve washed over him. The syringe slipped from his numb, shaking fingers, shattering on the floorboards, its deadly contents spilled uselessly into the mud. Sergeant Havoc, sensing the immediate danger had passed, pressed his scarred muzzle affectionately against Ruth's prosthetic knee, a silent acknowledgment of their shared history and the bond that transcended the chaos of the storm.
