The Vintage Vest That Stopped a Biker Club Leader in His Tracks
Previously: Evelyn drove four hundred miles to a rough roadside bar, carrying a secret from thirty years ago that would bring a powerful biker club to its knees.
Secrets Buried in the Leather
Before Evelyn could say another word, Butch grabbed her upper arm. His grip was firm but surprisingly devoid of the violence he had projected moments earlier. Without a word to the staring onlookers, he dragged her through a heavy door marked "Private" and into a cluttered back office, slamming the door shut and sliding a heavy brass bolt into place. The room smelled of old paper and engine oil.
"Do you have any idea what you've just done, Evelyn?"
Butch hissed, his voice tight with panic. Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. He knew her name. She had never met this man, yet he recognized her instantly.
"How do you know who I am?"
she demanded, backing against a metal filing cabinet.
"Because Thomas was my older brother,"
Butch revealed, rubbing a hand over his bald head.
"And you are the woman he gave up everything to protect. He told me if you ever showed up here wearing that vest, it meant the worst had happened."
Evelyn felt the room spin. Thomas had never mentioned having a brother. For thirty years, she believed her husband had simply abandoned her or met a tragic, lonely end. Butch stepped to a locked wall safe, quickly spinning the dial. He pulled out a battered metal lockbox and placed it on the desk, flipping it open. Inside lay a thick stack of letters, yellowed with age, all addressed to Evelyn in Thomas’s unmistakable, elegant handwriting. None of them had ever been mailed.
At the very bottom of the box lay a recent photograph. Evelyn’s hands trembled as she picked it up. It was Thomas. He was older, his hair completely white, but his gentle eyes were unmistakable. He was standing in front of a small log cabin in the woods.
"He was alive?"
Evelyn sobbed, the revelation tearing through her chest.
"All this time, he was alive?"
"He had to run, Evelyn. The club's co-founder, Marcus, wanted him dead because Thomas refused to let the club get involved in illegal smuggling,"
Butch explained grimly.
"But he didn't run far enough. Three days ago, Marcus found him. Thomas is gone, Evelyn. And Marcus is sitting right out there at the pool table, waiting for any loose ends."
