The Grand Palm Court Café of the Mayfair Imperial Hotel shimmered under its wrought-iron glass dome, sunlight cascading onto checkered marble tiles and brass service carts. It was a place where whispers were measured in gold and every glance held a hidden price. I was Elena, eight months pregnant, my back aching as I balanced a silver tray of iced lemon water for the VIP table.

Sterling Cross, a man who wore arrogance like cologne, snapped his fingers at me. His slicked-back blonde hair caught the light, and his sneer was a blade. "More ice," he ordered, not looking at me. I nodded, my braids heavy, my feet swollen, but I smiled. That's what we did — we smiled.

As I reached to refill his crystal pitcher, Sterling's hand shot out, knocking it over. The pitcher shattered, water and lemon slices pooling at my feet. He stared at the mess, then at me, his gold watch glinting. "Kneel down and wipe that!" he said slowly, his voice dripping with contempt.

My heart stopped. I looked at the wet floor, then at my belly — my eight-month-old baby girl, kicking gently, unaware of the humiliation. My lower lip trembled. I couldn't kneel. I couldn't. But I was just a server. What choice did I have?

Ella, my five-year-old, with her golden curls and sky-blue dress, tugged at my apron. She looked up at Sterling, her eyes filling with tears. "Leave my mommy alone, please!" she pleaded, her tiny voice cracking. Sterling didn't even glance at her. He reached out to shove my shoulder, to force me down.

I shielded my belly with my arms, bracing for the impact. But it never came.

Dominic — my husband, the man I'd married in secret, the father of my children — appeared out of nowhere. His granite jaw was set, his black three-piece suit immaculate. He caught Sterling's wrist mid-air, stopping it inches from me. "Nobody makes my wife kneel," he said, his voice low and dangerous.

Sterling's eyes widened in shock. "Dominic? What are you —"

Dominic stepped between us, his back to me, a wall of protection. The Chief Operating Officer of the hotel hurried forward, bowing, holding up a glowing platinum tablet. "Meet Lady Elena, our owner," he announced.

The color drained from Sterling's face. He looked from the deed — with my portrait as Sole Owner — to Dominic, to me. "This is impossible," he stammered. "I've been handling this hotel's acquisitions for years. You're just a —"

"A waitress?" I whispered, my voice steady now. "I was. Until I married him."

Dominic draped his jacket over my shoulders, then lifted Ella into his other arm. "Escort this person out now," he ordered. Four security guards converged on Sterling, who backpedaled, his sneer crumbling into disbelief.

As they dragged him toward the exit, Sterling shouted, "You'll regret this, Vance! I have connections!" But his voice faded into the marble echoes. The café fell silent. The guests stared. I clutched Dominic's jacket, breathing in his scent — sandalwood and safety.

"Are you okay?" Dominic asked, his voice soft now, his eyes searching mine. Ella wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face. I nodded, but my heart was pounding. This was only the beginning.

I knew Sterling wouldn't go quietly. And I knew something else — something I'd kept from Dominic for years. A secret that was about to surface, and it would shake us all.
