Previously: When kind-hearted waiter Ethan covers the bill for a struggling biker named Ray, he has no idea that a simple act of generosity is about to unlock a lifetime of family secrets.

The Engraving on the Ring

Inside the diner, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Harold glared at Ethan, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

"That little stunt is going to cost you your job, kid,"
Harold warned, tapping his clipboard aggressively.
"I don't care if you paid for it out of your own pocket. We have rules here. We don't welcome drifters."

Ethan ignored the threat, his mind still spinning from the strange warmth in the biker's parting words. "Thank you, son," the man had said. It resonated deep within Ethan, a young man who had grown up in the foster care system, never knowing his biological father. He felt an inexplicable pull toward the stranger, a feeling he couldn't quite shake off.

As Ethan began clearing the empty plates from booth four, his fingers brushed against something cold near the napkin dispenser. He gasped. Ray hadn't taken the silver ring after all. It was sitting right there, gleaming under the diner lights. Ethan picked it up, examining the intricate engravings on the metal. On the inner band, a date was meticulously etched: October 14, 2002. Ethan's breath caught in his throat. That was his exact birthdate.

"Give me that,"
Harold demanded, snatching the ring from Ethan's hand.
"If he left it, it belongs to the house. We can pawn it to cover your insubordination."
Ethan felt a sudden, fierce rush of adrenaline.
"No, Harold! That's mine!"
he yelled, reaching for the ring. Before Harold could pocket it, the diner's double doors swung open with a loud bang. Ray walked back inside, but this time, he wasn't looking defeated. He was holding a weathered leather envelope, and his eyes were locked onto Ethan.
