Previously: When Ruby offered a free meal to a rugged older biker, she was just being kind. She never expected him to return with his entire crew and a life-changing secret.

The Debt Of The Past

The sudden windfall left Ruby breathless, but before she could fully process Vance's staggering generosity, a sleek black sedan pulled into the gravel lot, kicking up a cloud of dust. The door opened, and out stepped Mr. Sterling, the local bank representative who had been hounding Ruby for months. He held a clipboard and wore a smug, victorious grin that made Ruby's stomach twist into knots.

"Well, Ruby, it's five minutes to five,"
Sterling sneered, ignoring the intimidating crowd of bikers.
"I assume you don't have the fifty thousand dollars to settle your father's defaulted loan. It's time to sign over the deed."

Ruby felt her throat tighten. The stack of cash Vance had handed her was substantial—easily several thousand dollars—but it was nowhere near the massive sum required to save the diner from foreclosure. She looked at Vance, her eyes pleading. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "Your kindness is beautiful, but it's not enough to stop him."

But Vance didn't look worried. He stepped between Ruby and the banker, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the corporate man. "Fifty grand is a drop in the bucket, Sterling," Vance rumbled, his voice like rolling thunder. "And you're not taking this place."

Sterling laughed nervously, taking a step back toward his car.

"This is bank business, old man. You and your gang can't stop a legal foreclosure with a handful of lunch money."

Vance slowly reached into the inner pocket of his leather vest. But instead of drawing a weapon, he pulled out a crisp, official document.

"I told you, I never forget a kindness,"
Vance said, looking back at Ruby.
"Twenty years ago, I was a desperate young man running from a past I hated. Your father found me shivering in the back of his shed. Instead of calling the sheriff, he fed me, gave me a job, and taught me how to be a man. I promised him I'd pay him back one day. I'm just a little late."
