The entire diner went dead silent. Customers stopped chewing, and the only sound was the low hum of the vintage refrigerator. Sarah felt a cold dread pool in her stomach. She had worked countless double shifts and tolerated Arthur's endless screaming just to pay her rent, and now, it was all over because of a simple act of empathy.

Mark immediately stood up, his protective instincts kicking in. His imposing figure in the charcoal suit towered over the furious manager.

"Are you out of your mind?" Mark demanded, his voice trembling with a mix of awe and anger. "This young woman just accomplished what dozens of therapists couldn't do in three years! My daughter hasn't spoken a single word since the accident that took her mother. And you are firing her for being kind?"

Arthur scoffed, crossing his thick arms.

"I don't run a therapy clinic, mister. I run a business. She is paid to serve food, not to chit-chat and waste time on charity cases. If she wants to play social worker, she can do it on someone else's dime. Now, Sarah, pack your things and get out before I call the police for trespassing!"
