The winter wind howled down the avenues of Chicago, carrying a relentless flurry of snow that blanketed the city in white. Inside the warm, amber-lit interior of The Golden Hearth, patrons laughed and clinked glasses, insulated from the bitter freezing temperatures. Nicole, an ash-blonde waitress wearing her maroon winter jacket over her apron, wiped down a table near the front window. As she cleared a plate, her gaze drifted to the snowy sidewalk outside. Under the flickering glow of a streetlamp, she spotted two small figures huddled together.

Her heart clenched. It was a young boy, no older than ten, wrapped in a dark navy hood, and his little sister, wearing a grey pom-pom hat and wrapped in a thin, tattered yellow blanket. They were shivering violently, trying to seek shelter in the shallow alcove of the restaurant’s entrance. Nicole looked around the bustling dining room. The customers ignored them, and her manager, Richard, was busy in his office, counting the night's profits.

Unable to ignore her conscience, Nicole slipped into the kitchen. She ladled hot, steaming vegetable soup into two bowls and grabbed a thick, clean blanket from the staff room. Stepping out into the freezing night, the icy wind stung her face, but she walked straight to the children and knelt down on the snowy concrete.

"Wait. This is for you. You shouldn't be out here in this cold," Nicole said softly, offering the tray.

The boy stared at the steaming soup in disbelief, his eyes wide and wet.

"For me? Really?" he whispered, his voice trembling.

Nicole gently adjusted the yellow blanket around the shivering little girl.

"For both of you. Tonight you are not alone," she promised.

The boy looked up at her, tears spilling down his cold-reddened cheeks.

"No one has ever stopped for us before," he whispered.

Before Nicole could reply, the heavy glass door of the restaurant flew open, and Richard’s angry voice shattered the quiet night.
