Previously: When kind waitress Sarah helped a silent girl in a wheelchair, she didn't expect her to speakβ€”or her boss to fire her in a fit of rage. But the truth was far deeper.

The Shadows of the Past

Sarah stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs. Tears stung her eyes as Arthur pointed a shaking, angry finger toward the exit. She didn't understand what she had done wrong. Trembling, she stripped off her red apron, grabbed her purse, and rushed out into the cool afternoon air. But she didn't get far before Mark caught up to her in the parking lot.

"Wait, please!" Mark called out, breathing heavily. "You don't understand what you just did. Lily hasn't spoken a single word in three years. Not since the car accident that took her mother's life and left her paralyzed. The doctors said it was selective mutism caused by severe trauma. But today, because of your kindness, she finally spoke."

Sarah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "But why did Arthur fire me for that? He looked absolutely terrified, not just angry."

Mark's face darkened. "Arthur is my late wife's father. He has blamed me for the crash ever since it happened. He took over my wife's share of this diner and has used his influence to keep Lily and me under his thumb, threatening to cut off her medical trust fund if I ever tried to take her away. He wants us miserable, and he wants Lily silent."

Determined to understand the depth of Arthur's malice, Sarah realized she had left her personal notebook in the employee breakroom. Slipping back through the diner's rear entrance, she crept down the narrow hallway. As she approached Arthur's office, she heard his muffled, frantic voice through the cracked door.

"She spoke, you idiot!" Arthur hissed into his phone. "She spoke to the waitress! If she starts talking to her father, she'll remember what she saw before the crash. She'll remember I was the one who cut the brake lines to frame Mark! We need to get them out of the state immediately!"
