Jack smiled, a warmth in his eyes that Clara hadn't seen during their first brief encounter. "I am," he said, taking off his sunglasses. "My name is Jack Vance. I've spent the last three months trying to find you, Clara." Clara invited him to sit on the porch swing, still bewildered by his sudden appearance. She wondered what could possibly bring a stranger from a rainy night to her doorstep. Jack looked down at the envelope in his hands, his expression turning solemn.

"That night in the diner," Jack began, his voice low and steady, "I was at the absolute lowest point of my life. My wife had passed away a year prior, my business was facing bankruptcy, and I felt completely invisible to the world. I rode my bike into the storm, not caring if I ever made it back. I walked into that diner expecting to be kicked out. I just wanted a moment of shelter before giving up entirely."

He paused, looking directly into Clara's eyes. "Then you brought me that tea. You didn't see a threat; you saw a human being."

Clara felt tears welling in her eyes as she listened to his confession. "I had no idea, Jack. I just saw someone who looked like they needed a warm drink," she whispered. Jack nodded. I went back to the city, faced my creditors, and managed to sell my remaining assets to a major developer. But that's not the only reason I'm here." He slid the manila envelope across the wooden table toward her. "I recently discovered that the developer I sold my assets to was planning to evict several residents in this valley to build a resort. Including you."
