The Twist

Sarah stepped between Damian and the incubator, her prosthetic arm a terrifying extension of her will. She snapped her flesh-and-blood left arm into a flawless military salute towards Buster, who responded with a subtle sweep of his tail, a silent acknowledgment of his protector. Then, she turned her gaze back to the cowering officer, her eyes piercing. "Stand down, drop your badge, and get the hell out of my partner's hospital," she commanded, her voice icy and unyielding. Damian’s knees buckled as the broken pole clattered to the floor, his humiliated eyes reflecting the rippling blue light of the vital sign monitors. He scrambled away, a broken man. Sarah watched him go, a grim satisfaction settling over her. She knelt beside Buster, stroking his scarred head. "It's okay, boy. You're safe now." Buster licked her hand, then nudged his head towards the incubator. Sarah's gaze followed his. The tiny infant inside, moments ago showing stable vitals, was now still. The monitor beside the incubator flatlined. Panic flared in Sarah’s chest. This wasn’t what she expected. Damian’s cruelty was a predictable evil, but this… this was something else entirely. She looked at Buster, his protective stance unwavering, his eyes fixed on the motionless child. He hadn’t been protecting the baby from Damian; he had been guarding it from… something else? Or perhaps, he had been guarding it from the inevitable.
