Previously: Five years after losing their twin boys, Sarah and John visit their grave, only for a mysterious little girl to reveal a secret that changes everything they knew about that tragic night.
The Secrets of St. Jude's
The drive to St. Judeβs Orphanage was a blur of silence and desperate prayers. The old brick building stood on the outskirts of town, its looming shadow casting a grim pall over the overgrown gardens. Lily led Sarah and John up the stone steps and through the heavy oak doors. The interior smelled of old paper and floor wax. Almost immediately, they were met by the headmistress, Helen, a stern woman whose polite smile instantly vanished when she saw the couple.
When John demanded to see the twins, Helen's demeanor hardened.
"I'm afraid you've been misinformed. We have no such children here," she said smoothly, though her fingers nervously gripped her clipboard. But Lily had already slipped past her, running down the dimly lit corridor. Pushing past Helen, Sarah and John followed the child to a heavy wooden door at the very end of the hall.
With a trembling hand, John threw the door open. There, sitting on two small beds, were two five-year-old boys with dirty-blonde hair and identical hazel eyes. Sarah fell to her knees, a sob tearing from her throat. It was them. Leo and Toby were alive.
Before they could embrace, the heavy door slammed shut behind them. Helen stood there, flanked by two burly security guards. Her face was no longer polite; it was cold and menacing.
"You shouldn't have come here," Helen sneered, holding up a file. "These boys are legally wards of this institution. They are scheduled for private adoption abroad tomorrow morning, and you have no right to them."
John stepped forward protectively, but Helen held up a document. It was a voluntary surrender of parental rights, bearing Sarah's exact signature. Sarah stared in horror; she had never signed such a document.
"Who did this?" John roared.Helen leaned in, her voice a cruel whisper.
"Your own mother, John. She sold them to us to pay off her debts, telling us you agreed to it."
