Richard led the two children out of the bakery and down the street to a quiet, cozy diner. He ordered a massive feast of pancakes, eggs, and warm milk for the siblings. Toby watched the food arrive with wide, disbelieving eyes, but he made sure Lily was fed first, gently cutting her pancakes before taking a bite himself. Richard sat across from them, his chest tight with an overwhelming wave of emotion. He couldn't take his eyes off the dirty denim jacket Toby wore.

"Where did you get that jacket, son?"
Richard asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Toby swallowed hard, looking protective. "It was my mom's," he said softly. "She told me it was special because her mother made it for her. I wear it so I can feel close to her."

Richard’s heart skipped a beat. Tears spilled over his eyelashes. "What was your mother's name, Toby?"

"Clara,"
Toby replied, his eyes filling with tears.
"But she went to heaven last month. She was very sick, and we couldn't stay in our apartment anymore because we didn't have any money."

It was the confirmation Richard had been praying for and dreading all at once. Clara, his estranged daughter who had run away five years ago after a bitter argument over her marriage, was gone. And these beautiful, starving children were his own grandchildren. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, framed photograph of Clara as a young girl, sliding it across the table. Toby gasped, his fingers trembling as he touched the glass. "How do you have this?"

"Because I am your grandfather, Toby," Richard said, his voice cracking with pure grief and love. "And I have been looking for you for so long." Before Toby could process the shocking revelation, Richard's phone vibrated. It was his private investigator. Richard stepped away briefly to answer. "Richard, we found Clara's records," the investigator warned urgently. "But you need to act fast. Her late husband's greedy brother, Marcus, has filed for custody of the kids to claim Clara's life insurance policy. He’s already searching the area with local authorities."
