A Father's Reckoning

Captain Arthur strode past the smoldering gate pillars, the intense cold of the rain doing little to quell the heat radiating from his protective gear. Clara, his precious cargo, coughed weakly within the warmth of his jacket. Her small breaths were shallow, but they were breaths nonetheless – a stark contrast to the suffocating smoke that had filled the mansion's study. "You were worried about your driveway while your daughter was suffocating in the study!" Arthur’s voice, a raw, guttural roar, sliced through the night. The words landed like blows, shattering Julian Vance's arrogant facade. His sneer collapsed, replaced by a mask of paralyzed shock. The expensive umbrella slipped from his trembling hand, landing with a splash in the muddy gutter. In a surge of primal desperation, Vance lunged forward, his manicured hands clawing at the air, desperate to reclaim his child. But Arthur was faster. With a swift, practiced movement, he caught Vance's wrist in a crushing, calloused grip. A twist of mechanical torque, effortless and brutal, sent Vance stumbling, his bespoke cashmere overcoat soaked as he landed with a wet thud onto his knees at the curb. "Keep your toxic hands off her until the paramedics stabilize her oxygen!" Arthur commanded, his voice sharp as shattered glass. Vance, his breath hitching audibly, could only stare. Tears welled in his eyes, tracing paths through the soot on his cheeks. His chin quivered, a picture of humiliated helplessness. The cold rain seemed to seep into his very bones, mirroring the chill of his dawning realization.
