The silence that followed John's command was suffocating. Sarah's smile flickered, a momentary shadow of panic crossing her elegant features before she quickly masked it with a soft laugh. She took a slow sip of her red wine, stepping gracefully toward John.

"Darling, don't be dramatic," Sarah murmured, reaching out to touch his arm. "Emma had a difficult episode and flew back secretly. I was just trying to manage her transition without worrying you."

But Emma flinched violently at the sound of Sarah's voice, shrinking behind her father's navy suit. "She's lying, Dad!" Emma sobbed, clutching the fabric of his trousers. "She never sent me to Switzerland. She had me locked in the old guest cabin by the lake. She took my phone, my ID... everything! I only escaped because the caretaker forgot to lock the side gate today."

John felt a sickening chill. The guest cabin was isolated, miles away on the edge of their vast property. He looked at Sarah, the woman he had married two years ago, and realized he was looking at a complete stranger. "Why, Sarah?" John asked, his voice dangerously low. "Why would you do this to my daughter?"

Sarah's composure finally began to crumble. Her eyes hardened, the mask of the loving stepmother slipping away to reveal a cold, calculating opportunist. She set her wine glass down on the console table with a sharp clink.

"She's unstable, John. You know she inherits her mother's trust fund next month. I was simply protecting our family's assets from her reckless behavior," Sarah sneered, her voice devoid of any warmth.

Emma shook her head frantically. "No! She made me sign papers, Dad. Power of attorney documents. She's been transferring my mother's money to an offshore account!"
