Previously: When wealthy Audrey knelt before a homeless man named Joseph with a mysterious ring box, she wasn't just proposing—she was desperately trying to trigger the memory of a man they tried to erase.

Audrey grabbed Joseph’s hand and pulled him to his feet. The sudden movement broke the spell of his confusion. Driven by pure survival instinct, they bolted into the crowded subway entrance nearby, disappearing into the subterranean labyrinth just as her father's guards flooded the plaza. They ran down dark corridors, ignoring the shouts of commuters, until Audrey pulled him into an abandoned maintenance tunnel, sliding the heavy metal door shut behind them.

In the dim, flickering light of the tunnel, Joseph collapsed against the damp brick wall, clutching his head in agony.

"My name... I am Joseph Sterling,"
he gasped, his chest heaving.
"The accident... it wasn't an accident, was it?"

The Stolen Legacy

Audrey knelt beside him, gently taking his hands. "No, my love," she said, tears streaming down her face. "My father engineered the crash because you refused to sell him the patent to your clean-energy technology. They couldn't kill you without drawing federal suspicion, so they paid doctors to erase your identity, dumped you on the streets, and told the world you ran away."

As the pieces of his shattered mind began to lock back into place, Joseph’s eyes hardened with a resolve she hadn't seen in years. But their sanctuary was short-lived. The heavy metal door groaned, and the beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness.

Step by step, Audrey’s brother, Julian, walked into the tunnel, flanked by two armed guards. A smug, victorious smile played on his lips.

"Very touching, Audrey,"
Julian sneered, tapping a metal baton against his palm.
"But did you really think you could escape our family's reach? Hand over the ring, and we’ll make sure your homeless friend goes back to sleep—permanently this time."
