The Sidewalk Proposal

The biting winter wind swept through the canyon of towering glass skyscrapers, but Eleanor barely felt the cold. Dressed in a sophisticated white coat that contrasted sharply with the gray concrete, she dropped to her knees. Before her sat Michael, a man whose rugged, weathered face bore the scars of a harsh life on the streets. He was wrapped in a worn-out brown hoodie, his eyes hollow and distant.

Behind them, a crowd of silent onlookers dressed in matching black suits stood like vultures, their watchful eyes tracking Eleanor's every move. She knew exactly who they were—sentries sent by her husband’s ruthless cousin, Arthur, to ensure the past remained buried. But Eleanor refused to be intimidated any longer.

With trembling hands, she opened a small blue velvet ring box, revealing a heavy gold signet ring. "Marry me. Please," she pleaded, her voice cracking with raw emotion.

Michael stared down at her, his expression a mix of confusion and fear. He looked at the wealthy woman kneeling in the dirt before him, completely bewildered.

"Why me?"
he asked, his voice raspy and broken from years of neglect.

Tears welled behind Eleanor’s dark sunglasses, spilling down her pale cheeks.

"Because it's you,"
she whispered, her heart breaking.
"Please."

She thrust the box closer. Michael's gaze drifted to the gold ring. Inside the band, a family emblem was intricately engraved. His eyes suddenly widened, a spark of familiarity piercing through the thick fog of his amnesia.

"This name..."
he whispered, his hand trembling as he reached out.

Before his fingers could touch the gold, the screech of tires shattered the silence. A heavy black SUV mounted the sidewalk, throwing the crowd into a panic. The doors flew open, and a burly security guard lunged forward.

"Get him, stop!"
the driver roared.
"Don't let him remember!"

the driver roared. "Don't let him remember!"
