Arthur stared at the photograph, his hands shaking violently. The woman in the picture was Clara, the only woman he had ever truly loved. Eleven years ago, she had disappeared without a trace, leaving Arthur devastated and vulnerable to his family's demands that he marry Victoria, a wealthy heiress. "Arthur, what is the meaning of this?" Victoria’s sharp voice cut through the air as she marched over, her eyes burning with suspicion. "Who is this filthy child, and why are you looking at him like you’ve seen a ghost?"

Ignoring his wife and the murmuring crowd, Arthur grabbed Toby’s small, cold hand. "We are going inside," he announced, leading the boy away from the gala and into his private study, locking the heavy mahogany door behind them.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of his office, Arthur knelt down to be at eye level with Toby.

"Tell me about your mother, Toby. What is wrong with her?"

Toby wiped his nose on his sleeve. "She has a bad heart, sir. The doctors say she needs an expensive surgery, or she won't make it. She never wanted to bother you, but yesterday she got really bad. She gave me this photo and told me to find you."

Arthur's heart ached with a mixture of guilt and rage. "Why didn't she find me sooner?" he asked, his voice cracking.

Toby looked down. "She said we weren't allowed to. She said a man in a fancy suit came to our house years ago and told her that if she ever contacted you, you would lose everything. He paid for our tiny apartment and told her to stay hidden. But the money stopped coming last month when he died." Arthur gasped. The description of the man matched Victoria's late father—the man who had orchestrated Arthur's marriage to his daughter.
