Previously: When wealthy businessman Robert offered a grease-stained young mechanic ten million dollars to fix his luxury sedan in minutes, he never expected a sudden engine blast would reveal a shocking family secret.

The Mist Clears

Coughing violently, Robert stumbled backward, his hands frantically waving away the thick cloud of white vapor. The hot steam stung his eyes, but as the mist began to dissipate in the warm afternoon breeze, his vision cleared. He looked over at Maya, expecting to find her panicked or injured. Instead, she was standing tall, her ginger hair now damp and clinging to her forehead. The force of the steam blast had blown back her heavy red hood, exposing her neck and collarbone.

Robert’s breath caught in his throat. His heart hammered against his ribs, not from the shock of the steam, but from what he saw resting against her skin. Hanging from a delicate silver chain was an intricate, antique locket shaped like a crescent moon. It was a one-of-a-kind piece Robert had custom-made decades ago for his beloved late wife, who had passed it down to their only daughter.

But that wasn't all. Just below the locket, on her left collarbone, was a distinct, star-shaped burn scar.

"Where... where did you get that locket?" Robert whispered, his voice suddenly losing all of its commanding authority. His hands began to shake uncontrollably as he stared at her.

Maya instinctively reached up, covering the silver pendant with her grease-stained fingers. Her confident grin vanished, replaced by a defensive, guarded expression.

"It’s none of your business," she snapped, stepping back. "I’m fixing your car, mister. That’s all you’re paying me for."

Robert took a step closer, ignoring the grime on the car. "That locket belonged to my daughter, Clara. She wore it the night of the tragic accident eighteen years ago. The rescue team told me she was swept away by the river... they told me she was gone forever."

Maya’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. The heavy wrench slipped from her hand, clattering loudly against the concrete pavement. She stared at the billionaire, her lips trembling as the pieces of a lifelong puzzle suddenly began to fall into place.
