The garden party faded into a blur of meaningless noise. Robert stood up so abruptly that his heavy chair tipped backward, crashing onto the stone patio. He ignored the gasps of his wealthy guests. His entire focus was locked onto the young boy standing before him. Looking closely at Toby’s face, Robert saw the unmistakable green of his own eyes and the soft curve of Clara’s smile.

"Where is your mother, Toby?"

Robert demanded, his hands trembling as he gripped the boy's shoulders.

"She’s at the municipal clinic on Oak Street,"

Toby sobbed.

"She’s really sick, and the doctors said she won't last much longer without help."

Without a word of explanation to his business partners, Robert grabbed Toby’s hand and ran to his luxury sedan. He drove frantically through the city, his mind racing with memories. Ten years ago, Clara had disappeared overnight. His powerful father had told him she had taken a massive bribe to leave. Robert had spent a decade harboring a bitter hatred for her, believing she had sold out their love. Now, he realized he had been fed a monstrous lie.

They arrived at the grim, sterile clinic. Toby led him down a narrow, dimly lit hallway to a cramped room. Inside, lying on a narrow cot, was Clara. She was pale and terribly thin, but her eyes fluttered open as they entered.

"Robert..."

she whispered, a tear escaping her eye.

Robert fell to his knees by the bed, taking her cold hand.

"Clara, why did you leave? Why didn't you tell me about our son?"

he cried.

Clara squeezed his hand weakly.

"Your father threatened to ruin my family with false charges if I didn't disappear,"

she explained.

"I found out I was pregnant after I left. I knew if your father found out, he would use his power to take my baby. I had to protect Toby."

Before Robert could speak, the heart monitor beside the bed began to beep frantically. Clara’s eyes closed, and her hand went limp.
