Previously: When Evelyn confronted her son for serving food to a bruised, homeless boy at a high-society gala, she expected an apology. Instead, she uncovered a life-saving secret that changed everything.

Evelyn sank to her knees right there on the dusty floor, completely disregarding her expensive designer trousers. She looked closely at Carter, the bruised boy who had risked his life for her only child. The bruises on his arms and the deep scrape along his cheek weren't from a street fight; they were the violent marks of an asphalt slide. He had taken the brunt of the impact to save Ethan.

The Bitter Truth

The room around them seemed to fade into silence. Evelyn gently reached out, her hand shaking as she touched Carter's shoulder. He flinched slightly but didn't pull away.

"Is this true?" Evelyn asked, her voice barely a whisper. "Did you save my son?"

Carter nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on his worn-out sneakers.

"I was sitting near the intersection by the park," Carter muttered. "I saw him crossing. He had his headphones on and didn't see the black SUV running the red light. It was coming too fast. I just... I just jumped. I pushed him onto the grass, but the bumper clipped my shoulder and threw me onto the pavement."

Evelyn gasped, remembering the frantic phone call she had received from Ethan last Tuesday, claiming he had tripped and scraped his knee. He had hidden the truth because he was terrified, but now it all made sense. She looked at Carter’s tattered clothes and the thin blanket stuffed into his backpack.

"Why didn't you stay? Why didn't you let the paramedics look at you?" Evelyn asked, her heart aching for the young boy.

Carter swallowed hard, a tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his cheek.

"I didn't want anyone to call the police," Carter whispered. "I ran away from my foster home last month. They... they weren't nice to me. I was scared they'd send me back if they found out I was living under the bridge."
