The Truth Behind the Bruises

The anger that had consumed Helen just moments before vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp dread. She looked at the dirty boy—Toby—and realized the bruises on his face and the scrape on his arm weren't from a street fight. They were the physical proof of his heroism. He had thrown his own body into the path of a speeding vehicle to save her only child.

Helen slowly sank to her knees on the cold marble floor, completely unbothered by the dirt transferring to her expensive white silk blouse.

"Is this true, sweetie?"

she asked Toby, her voice cracking with emotion.

"Did you save my boy?"

Toby shrank back slightly, intimidated by her elegance, but nodded slowly.

"The black car didn't stop at the light,"

he whispered, his voice barely audible.

"He was looking at his phone. I just... I didn't want the other boy to get hurt."

Helen let out a ragged sob, reaching out to gently touch Toby's uninjured hand. She immediately noticed how cold and frail he was. Leo wrapped his arms around his mother's neck, crying softly.

"We have to help him, Mom. He has nowhere to go,"

Leo whispered.

Helen immediately took action. She bypassed the hotel staff and called her family's private physician to the hotel suite. While they waited, she ordered the kitchen to bring up a feast of warm soup, fresh bread, and fruit. As Toby ate ravenously, the doctor examined him, confirming he had a sprained wrist, deep contusions, and severe malnutrition. But the physical wounds were nothing compared to the emotional ones. When Helen gently asked about his parents, Toby stared at his lap.

"I don't have anyone,"

he said quietly.

"I ran away from my foster home last week because they... they weren't nice to me. I've been sleeping behind the grocery store."
