Martha’s knees buckled, and she knelt onto the cold marble floor, completely ignoring her expensive designer clothes. The tears flowed freely now as she looked at the boy she had just judged so harshly. She reached out, her hands shaking, and gently touched Jake's shoulder.

"Is this true, sweetheart? Did you save my baby?"

she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Jake nodded slowly, refusing to meet her eyes.

"I was just looking for food near the dumpster by the highway,"

he muttered softly.

"I saw the car swerving. I didn't want him to get hurt. I just reacted."

Martha looked at the bruises on the boy's face and arms.

"Where did you get these bruises, Jake? And where are your parents?"

"My dad was Marcus Vance,"

Jake whispered.

"He used to work at your husband's construction company before the accident last year."

Martha gasped, covering her mouth. Marcus Vance had been a loyal employee who tragically passed away in a site accident.
