A Cruel Welcome

The polished tiles of the St. Jude Memorial Hospital reflected the harsh, sterile lights of the VIP wing. Ruth adjusted her grip on the heavy paper grocery bag, her hands trembling slightly. She wore her faded camel-colored coat, the best garment she owned, though it was visibly frayed at the cuffs. Inside the bag were fresh red apples, a jar of homemade preserves, and a small, hand-knit baby blanket she had spent months crafting. She had traveled three hours by bus just to catch a glimpse of her newborn grandson.

As she approached the glass-walled VIP maternity suite, her heart swelled with hope. Through the pristine glass, she saw her daughter-in-law, Sophia, cradling a tiny bundle in her arms. Sophia was a wealthy heiress, and she had never made any secret of her disdain for Ruth’s modest background. Still, Ruth believed that the birth of a child could heal old wounds.

Before Ruth could reach the door, the handle turned, and her son, George, stepped out. Clad in a sharp, expensive black wool suit that Ruth had helped pay for by selling her late husband's wedding ring, George looked at his mother with cold disgust. There was no warmth in his eyes, only embarrassment.

"What are you doing here, Mother?" George hissed, stepping in front of her to block her path. "I told you not to come. You embarrass me."

Ruth’s eyes welled with tears. "George, please. I just wanted to bring some fresh fruit and see my grandson. I won't stay long, I promise."

Inside the suite, Sophia watched the confrontation. Instead of showing empathy, she walked closer to the glass, holding the baby. A cruel, mock-shocked expression crossed her face. She raised her hands and began to clap mockingly, urging George to get rid of the "nuisance."

Spurred by his wife's encouragement, George did the unthinkable. As Ruth tried to step past him, he maliciously extended his leg, kicking her ankle with sudden, violent force. Ruth gasped as she lost her balance, crashing heavily to the polished floor. The paper bag tore open, sending bright red apples and groceries scattering loudly across the quiet corridor.
