Previously: When cruel socialite Victoria tears a silver crest from an innocent orphan's neck, she expects to ruin her. Instead, her stepson William recognizes the royal heirloom, exposing a dark family secret.

The Secret in the Silver

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. Victoria stumbled back a step, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle a gasp of terror. The crimson of her gown now stood in stark contrast to the sudden, ghostly pallor of her skin. She tried to recover her composure, her eyes darting nervously to the whispering onlookers.

"William, don't be ridiculous," Victoria stammered, her voice shaking despite her best efforts. "It’s a cheap trinket. That girl is a common thief. She must have stolen it from our family vaults!"

But William’s grip on the necklace only tightened. "This crest never entered the family vaults, Victoria," he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. "This belonged to my biological mother, the late Duchess Eleanor. It was commissioned by her family and was meant to be passed down only to her firstborn daughter—the sister I was told died in the hospital twenty-three years ago."

Gasps erupted from the crowd. Lily stood trembling, holding her baby closer as the weight of William’s words washed over her. She looked at the silver crest, then at William, her voice barely a whisper.

"My adoptive mother gave it to me," Lily said softly, her eyes shining with tears. "She said it was wrapped in my baby blanket when I was left at the orphanage gates. She told me never to lose it, because it was the only key to finding out who I really was."

William turned his gaze to Lily, his fierce expression softening into profound disbelief and hope. He stepped closer, looking at the delicate features of her face, recognizing the striking resemblance to the portrait of the mother he had lost so long ago. Victoria saw the connection forming and panicked, grabbing William’s arm.

"She is lying!" Victoria screamed, her aristocratic facade completely shattering. "She is an impostor trying to steal our legacy! Guard, throw this peasant out!"
