Megan hurriedly packed box after box of artisanal bread, pastries, and sandwiches, her hands shaking under Henry's intense gaze. Once the counter was cleared, Henry paid the astronomical bill without blinking an eye. He grabbed the large bags and gently guided Ethan and Emma out of the bakery and into a warm, quiet diner next door. He ordered the largest plates of warm pancakes, eggs, and hot cocoa for the famished siblings.

As the children ate ravenously, Henry watched them, a strange tightness gripping his chest. There was something hauntingly familiar about the way Ethan shielded his little sister, and the striking blue color of Emma's eyes.

"Where are your parents, son?"

Henry asked gently, softening his usual stern demeanor.

Ethan swallowed a bite of pancake, his eyes darting around nervously. "Our mommy went to heaven last month," he whispered. "She was very sick. After she died, our stepfather took her apartment and told us we were too expensive to keep. He threw us out on the street."
