Previously: When young Olivia tried to take a carton of milk for her starving brother, a wealthy stranger stepped in with an offer that changed their lives forever.

An Unexpected Benefactor

Arthur watched from behind the counter, his hand hovering near the phone. James stood up, pulling a leather wallet from his breast pocket. He laid a crisp hundred-dollar bill on the counter. "Keep the change, Arthur," James said quietly. "And pack a box with bread, cheese, fresh fruit, and whatever else this young lady can carry."

Olivia stared at the money, then at the elegant man standing before her. "Why are you doing this?" she whispered, wiping a tear from her nose with her sleeve. "We don't have anything to give you."

James smiled gently, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "You don't need to give me anything, Olivia. Let’s get this food to your brother."

As Arthur quickly packed a cardboard box with groceries, he looked at James with a mixture of respect and curiosity. "You're a good man, sir. Not many would stop for a runaway." Arthur then turned to Olivia, his voice softening. "Your mother was a good woman, Olivia. I was deeply sorry to hear about the accident last month. If I had known things were this bad, I would have helped sooner."

The revelation hung heavily in the air. Olivia's parents had perished in a tragic car crash just four weeks prior, leaving her and her six-year-old brother, Leo, utterly alone in their small, rented apartment. Fearing they would be separated by social services, Olivia had kept their situation a secret, struggling to survive on what little scraps she could find.

James carried the heavy box of groceries as Olivia led him down the dimly lit suburban streets. They arrived at a dilapidated apartment building with peeling paint. Inside their drafty room, little Leo lay shivering under a thin blanket, his face pale. When he saw his sister and the tall stranger carrying a box of food, his eyes widened with hope. But as James looked around the empty, freezing apartment, his heart broke. He realized this was not just a temporary struggle; it was a matter of life and death.
