Previously: When Margaret poured wine over her elderly maid Edith, she expected submission. Instead, her husband George intervened with a fury that unraveled a lifetime of hidden family truths.

The Secret in the Apron

"Are you insane, George?" Margaret hissed, straightening her pink pantsuit, though her composure was entirely shattered. "You attacked me! Your own wife! For this pathetic, useless maid?"

George didn't answer her. Instead, he dropped to his knees, ignoring the red wine pooling on the floor, and gently lifted Edith. He pulled his silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and began wiping the red stains from her face with a tenderness that made Margaret's stomach turn.

"I'm so sorry," George whispered to Edith, his voice breaking. "I should have been here. I should have protected you sooner."

"George, what is the meaning of this?" Margaret demanded, stepping forward. "She ruined the imported rug! She is a servant!"

"She is not a servant to me, Margaret," George said, his voice cold as ice as he helped Edith to a chair. "And she never will be again."

As Edith sat down, a small, laminated photograph slipped from her wet apron pocket and fluttered to the floor. Margaret sneered and snatched it up before George could reach it. She intended to use whatever it was to humiliate Edith further, but as she looked at the faded image, her breath caught in her throat.

The photograph showed a young, beautiful woman holding a newborn baby in a hospital bed. Beside them stood a young man who looked remarkably like George’s late father. But it was the young woman's face that made Margaret's blood run cold. Despite the passage of forty years, the eyes were unmistakable.

"This... this is Edith," Margaret whispered, her voice suddenly trembling. "And this baby..."

"Is me," George said, standing tall. "Edith isn't just our maid, Margaret. She is my biological mother."
