Previously: When wealthy Diana threw coins at a struggling girl in a bakery, she thought she was untouchable. But an observant baker was about to expose a family secret.

The Baker Steps In

Fred wiped his hands on his apron and stepped out from behind the counter, his heavy boots echoing in the sudden silence of the aisle. The tense atmosphere was broken only by Clara's quiet, muffled whimpering as she remained on her knees. Diana turned to leave, a self-satisfied smile playing on her lips, but Fred firmly blocked her path. "Going somewhere, Diana?" he asked, his voice low, steady, and filled with authority.

Diana scoffed, adjusting her expensive bag on her shoulder. "Move aside, old man. I don't have time for your games. And you really should keep an eye on these street rats ruining your aisle."

Fred didn't budge an inch. Instead, he reached deep into his apron pocket and pulled out a faded, laminated newspaper clipping. "I think you do have time," Fred said, holding it up so she could see the headline clearly. "Especially when it concerns the estate of Arthur Vance."

Diana’s face instantly drained of color, her smug expression vanishing in an instant. She stared at the clipping, which featured a photo of a younger Fred standing proudly next to a wealthy older man—Clara and Diana's late grandfather. "Where did you get that?" she whispered, her voice suddenly trembling with panic.

"Your grandfather was a regular customer of mine for thirty years," Fred explained, his voice echoing in the quiet aisle. "Before he passed, he told me how you hid his true will. He told me how you left your younger sister Clara with absolutely nothing, casting her out onto the streets so you could inherit the entire family fortune."

Clara stopped gathering the coins, looking up in absolute shock. She had always believed her grandfather had forgotten her in his final days. "Is that... is that true, Diana?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she looked at her sister.

Diana panicked, her arrogant demeanor completely shattering. "This is ridiculous! You're just a baker, what do you know? It's a lie!" she shrieked, looking around frantically as other shoppers began to gather, whispering and pointing.
