Previously: When masked mercenaries crashed Clara’s wedding, they expected an easy target. Instead, they unleashed a bride with a lethal secret—and exposed a devastating betrayal from the groom.

The Shadow of Deception

The remaining five mercenaries hesitated, their tactical formation broken by the sheer ferocity of a bride in a wedding dress. Seeing their leader unconscious and bleeding on the floor, they exchanged tense glances. Clara grabbed a heavy silver candelabra from a nearby table, her eyes burning with an icy determination that no one in the room had ever seen before.

"Who sent you?" Clara demanded, her voice cutting through the whimpers of the terrified guests.

Realizing they had lost the element of surprise, the attackers grabbed their fallen leader and retreated through the broken doors, disappearing into the estate's sprawling gardens. Clara didn't chase them. Instead, she knelt beside Julian, who was still groveling on the floor, shaking uncontrollably. She noticed something sticking out of his inner tuxedo pocket—a burner phone, its screen flashing with an active, unencrypted text message.

Clara snatched the phone. The message read: "Target secured. Make sure the bride doesn't survive the ceremony." It was sent from a number she recognized all too well. It was her own father-in-law’s private line. But what shocked her even more was Julian's sent reply from just ten minutes prior: "She suspects nothing. Do it now."

"Julian, what is this?" Clara whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a rising, lethal rage. "You set me up?"

Julian scrambled backward, his face pale as he looked at the woman he had just sworn to love forever. He realized then that he had never truly known his wife. He had married her for her family's inheritance, underestimating the quiet woman who had spent her twenties in elite government intelligence—a past she had retired from to build a peaceful life with him. Or so she thought.
